Equipment Buyer's Guide

Teton Lacrosse ● HomeResourcesEquipment Buyer's Guide

overview

Buying lacrosse gear for the first time can feel overwhelming — it doesn’t need to be. This guide covers what you actually need, what you can rent, and what’s worth spending money on.

Team colors (preferred): black, white, gray, with green accents
Note: Boys’ and girls’ equipment is different.

First-Year Players

If this is your child’s first season, TVYLA offers rental equipment for all ages (while supplies last). We strongly recommend renting protective gear and purchasing a stick (you can also wait until you evaluate your child's commitment to the sport).

What to Buy vs What to Rent

Strongly Recommend Buying

  • Lacrosse stick (most personal piece of gear)

  • Mouthguard

  • Cleats (if you don’t already own some)

Great to Rent (Especially for New Players)

  • Helmets

  • Pads

  • Gloves

Girls’ Lacrosse — Required Equipment

  • Women’s lacrosse stick

  • Women’s lacrosse helmet (NOCSAE-rated, black only)

  • Colored mouthguard

  • Cleats (soccer cleats or softball cleats work great)

Boys’ Lacrosse — Required Equipment

  • Lacrosse stick

  • Lacrosse helmet (black only; NOCSAE-rated)

  • Colored mouthguard

  • Shoulder pads (NOCSAE-rated)

  • Arm pads

  • Gloves

  • Athletic cup (mandatory)

  • Cleats (soccer or football cleats work)

Goalies:
TVYLA provides goalie-specific equipment for all teams.

Quick Buying Tips (No Gear Nerd Stuff)

Sticks

  • You do not need the newest model

  • Last year’s sticks on sale are perfect

  • Beginners should start with a short stick

  • One good stick is better than two average ones

Helmets

  • Must be lacrosse-specific and NOCSAE-rated

  • Black helmets are required for uniform compliance

  • Avoid used helmets unless approved by TVYLA

Mouthguards

  • Must be colored (refs need to see them)

  • Better-quality mouthguards offer better protection

  • Replace chewed or worn-out mouthguards

Pads & Gloves

  • Comfort matters more than brand

  • Clearance gear works just fine

  • No need to buy top-tier equipment for youth players

Clothing & Footwear

  • Athletic shorts and/or pants

  • Long- and short-sleeve shirts (weather dependent)

  • Cleats for grass

  • Athletic shoes for gym or pavement
